Coast Lines was for a time one of the great success stories of British shipping. Focussing on the coastal liner trades, the group dominated its chosen sector of business more successfully than almost any other shipping company in the United Kingdom. But it is also one of the great untold stories of the shipping industry.

The story of Coast Lines’ major ancestors told in this book has three strands. Each of these has threads of its own, tying together Liverpool, Bristol and Wexford, amongst other ports whence came the various (and changing) partners.

Nick Robins and his collaborators have proven their mettle in being able to reconstruct the prehistory of Coast Lines, and to compile a superb collection of photographs of the ships involved. In choosing to work with Malcolm McRonald he has a partner who is an acknowledged expert on Irish Sea shipping and a meticulous ship historian. The two authors seem to have left few stones unturned.
