An evocative selection of films depicting London trams during their final months of operation and detailed coverage of stages 6 - 8 of Operation Tramaway. We begin with Stage 6 (January 1952) which included removal of trams from Victoria, Vauxhall Bridge, Catford, Downham and Grove Park, terminus of one of London's last tram extensions. Stage 7 (April 1952) featured the closure of the Kingsway Subway and the last two routes penetrating north London with full coverage of the subway itself. The last all-conduit route, the 14 mile 35 (Highgate - Forest Hill) is well photographed. Stage 8 (July 1952) marked the end of six routes and 160 cars. Trams are seen amongst the buses on the Embankment, at Southwark Bridge, along the Old Kent Road, at New Cross, in the suburbs from Lewisham, Woolwich and mingling with the trolleybuses out to Abbey Wood. Last day activity includes colour sequences and the final ceremony at New Cross depot. Special features: Enthusiast tours The little enclave of trolley operation around Heme Hill including the wrong line running at Loughborough junction Change pits Wheel-carrier 011 A visit to Charlton Works Penhall Road And finally some of the London trams which survived the mass scrapping programme.
