This ex display copy of this book is a very interesting and exciting story of which Tynesiders, Teesiders, and the people of both Sunderland and Hartlepool are deservedly proud. Champion of the company history was James Layton of Acklam, Middlesbrough who prepared notes on company ships and company activities, some of which have been published in the Tees Packet, the World Ship Society's Teesside Branch journal, and as letters to Sea Breezes. Today the role of champion falls to Harold Appleyard at Wolviston and it is through Harold that the author, Nick Robins has been able to access some of James Layton's work. Other sources include Public Records offices, libraries and museums. This publication is a valuable record of of the company and a valuable addition to maritime history.
