The 20-page introduction describes the unusual circumstances in which, in 2004, the author was found himself unofficially engaged to prepare and present a Feasibility Study into the use of steam traction to operate a proposed 100km coal transportation railway in Indonesia. This is followed by 10 pages of reflections on certain aspects of the report that he prepared. The bulk of the book contains the 140 page report that he prepared. It concludes with a 5 page article that the author subsequently wrote on the subject of “Sustainable Railway Traction Options” for a New Zealand publication in which he used the same principles and methods of calculation that were developed for the Indonesian project.

Had the Indonesian coal transportation project gone ahead, it would almost certainly have been the last time steam traction would have been adopted for commercial freight haulage.
